Smart Mute is a popular Chrome extension that automatically mutes all other tabs if sound starts playing on the active tab. But it turns out Chrome natively supports this feature via Chrome flags. This is useful when you are browsing multiple tabs and cannot figure out which one is playing the sound. Let’s see how it works.

Smart Mute on Google Chrome

To enable the Chrome flag, open Google Chrome, type “chrome: // flags” in the Omnibox, and press Enter.

For this to work, we need to enable 2 flags. The first flag “Audio Focus Enforcement” allows Chrome to focus on the current tab that is running media. But it just blocks the sound from the other tab and doesn’t pause it. In order for Chrome to pause media playback, we need to enable another flag “Media Session Service”.

Now search the search bar for “audio focus-duress” and “media-session-service”. Enable flags and restart Google Chrome. Alternatively, you can also access the flags by clicking the Audio Focus Enforcement and Media Session Service link.

These flags will also work in other Chromium browsers like Brave, Vivaldi, Edge Chromium, etc.

While it does have a few drawbacks, the native flag works pretty well compared to the Smart Mute Chrome extension. Below are its advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages:

There is no way to blacklist websites that automatically play videos with sound.

Advantages:

It does not read your browsing history, unlike Smart Mute.
SmartMute does not pause media playback, it only blocks audio output.
