When setting up Gmail on your iPhone, problems with your Internet connection or Gmail servers can disrupt the process. Other likely causes include device crashes, outdated operating systems, and incorrect Gmail account settings.
This guide covers 10 troubleshooting steps you can try if you can’t link Gmail to your iOS device.
1. Check Your Internet Connection
An active internet network is required to set up and use Gmail on your iPhone or iPad. If you can’t link Gmail to your iPhone Mail app, make sure you have an internet connection up and running.
Open a web browser, visit a few websites and see if they go through. If no web page loads in your browser, the problem is with your Internet connection.
Turn Airplane Mode on and off on iPhone to refresh the connection and try again. If you’re using cellular data, switch to a Wi-Fi connection and try again. Also, make sure the Mail and Settings apps have access to cellular data. If the problem persists, contact your service provider.
Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and make sure cellular data access for mail and settings is turned on.
2. Check Gmail Service Status
This issue may also be caused by temporary glitches with the Gmail servers. Open Gmail on another device and see if you can sign in or access your mailbox. If you’re unable to set up or access Gmail on a device, it’s most likely an issue with your email service.
Open the Google Workspace status bar in a web browser and check the status indicator next to Gmail.
A green check mark (✅) means that Gmail is working properly and there are no problems with the mail service. Conversely, an orange exclamation mark and a red X signify “service outage” and “service outage” respectively.
If the service crashes or crashes, you will have to wait until Google resolves the issue in order to use Gmail. Try setting up Gmail again when the status icon turns green again.
3. Clear Gmail’s Cookies in Safari
Cookie corruption in Safari can prevent iOS from linking your Gmail account to the Mail app. If Safari can’t open this page because too many redirects occurred while setting up Gmail, or similar errors, clearing Safari’s cookies may solve the problem.
Open Settings > Safari, scroll down and click Advanced.Click Website Data.
Type gmail in the search bar and press “Search” on your keyboard.Click “Edit” in the lower left corner.Click the red minus sign next to “gmail.com” and select “Delete”.
This will delete cookies and other related browsing data associated with Gmail. Try setting up Gmail again and see if that solves the problem.
4. Check the Mail App Settings
Can’t find your Gmail inbox in Mail app after adding Google account on iPhone? Check the Mail settings menu and make sure Mail sync is enabled for your Google email account.
Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Gmail and turn on the Mail option. If it’s already on, turn it off, wait a minute, and turn it back on.
5. Clear or Reset the Unlock Captcha
Sometimes Google uses the CAPTCHA protocol to protect your account from suspicious or fraudulent access. This security protocol may also restrict some third-party email applications from accessing your account.
If you can’t set up Gmail on your new iPhone, resetting the CAPTCHA might fix the problem. The operation will temporarily disable all additional security protocols, except for two-step verification or two-factor authentication, which prevent the Gmail setup process.
Visit the DisplayUnlockCaptcha page in a web browser (preferably on a computer). Sign in to Google if no browser is associated with your account.Click Continue to continue.
The message “Account access enabled” should appear on the screen. Try setting up Gmail again in the Mail app.
6. Enable IMAP in Gmail Settings
Gmail uses the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to send messages to your devices. If your Gmail inbox is empty in the Mail app, make sure IMAP is the preferred server in your Gmail settings. Open the Gmail website in a web browser and follow these steps:
Click the gear icon in the upper right corner of your inbox and select View all settings.
Go to the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab, check the “IMAP Access” line and select “Enable IMAP”. To continue, select Save Changes.
Try setting up Gmail on your iPhone and see if you can access your messages.
7. Set Up Gmail Manually
If you can’t add Gmail (automatically) to your iPhone with your email address and password, try setting up Gmail manually.
Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts and click Add Account.Select Other and click Add Mail Account.
Enter your name, email address and password in the appropriate fields. Give the account a descriptive summary in the Description field and click Next. Click on the IMAP tab and navigate to the Incoming Mail Server section. Enter imap.gmail.com as the “Hostname” and enter your Gmail address in the “Username” field. Then enter your Gmail password in the Password field.In the Outgoing Mail Server section, enter smtp.gmail.com in the Hostname field and click Next.Please wait. setup wizard to verify your account information. Enable Mail on the IMAP page and click Save.
Open the Mail app and see if it connects to your Gmail inbox.
8. Restart Your iPhone
A simple reboot of the device can fix this issue. Turn off your iPhone, turn it back on, and try setting up Gmail from scratch.
If your iPhone supports Face ID, press and hold the side button and any of the volume buttons. After that, drag the slider to the right to turn off iPhone.
For an iPhone with a home button, press and hold the side button until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to the right and wait 30 seconds for the device to turn off.
You can also turn off your iPhone from the Settings menu. Go to Settings > General > Power Off and move the slider to the right. Wait about 30 seconds for your iPhone to turn off completely.
To restart your iPhone, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Connect your phone to the internet (via Wi-Fi or cellular data) and try linking Gmail with the Mail app again.
9. Update Your iPhone
The issue may be due to bugs in your iPhone’s operating system. Check your iPhone settings menu and install the latest version of iOS available for your device.
Open the Settings app, select General, tap Software Update, and tap Download and Install to update your iPhone.
10. Use the Gmail App
Install the standalone Gmail app from the App Store if none of the above troubleshooting solutions fix the problem. Go to the Gmail information page in the App Store and install the app on your iPhone.
