So, What is Docker?

Docker is an open-source containerization framework that allows developers to package their code or applications inside containers. Containers are self-contained instances that come with their own libraries and dependencies.

This will take care of any missing libraries or dependency issues during installation when the application is running on different platforms. Compared to running VMs, Docker is lightweight, takes up less hard disk space, is economical in resources, and has better performance and efficiency.

Installing Docker on CentOS 8

To install Docker on your system, make sure you have the following before proceeding:

When everything is clear, follow the instructions to install Docker on CentOS.

Step 1. Update your system

First, log into the server and update the system as follows:

$ sudo dnf update

When prompted to proceed with the installation, simply press “Y” and press the ENTER key on your keyboard. The system will update all packages with newer versions, including kernel, systemd, and other application packages.

This may take several minutes depending on when your system was last updated. So, wait for the system to update the packages.

Step 2.

Add the Docker repository

After completing the upgrade, you need to add the Docker repository to the system. This way you will be able to install Docker using the DFN package manager.

To add a repository, run the following command in a terminal:

[user @ centos8 ~] $ sudo dnf config-manager –add-repo = https: //download.docker.com/linux/centos/docker-ce.repo

You should get simple output confirming the repo has been added.

Once the Docker repository has been created, it is worth taking a look at the available Docker versions. You can do this by entering the command:

[user @ centos8 ~] $ sudo dnf list docker-ce

The output shows the Docker package name, architecture, and version, as well as some of them, as you can see in the output.

Install Docker-CE

Next, we’re going to install Docker-CE, which is short for Docker Community Edition. Disclaimer: The latest version of Docker is usually not available for all repositories. Therefore, we will add the –nobest flag to the command as follows:

[user @ centos8 ~] $ sudo dnf install docker-ce –nobest

The –nobest flag allows us to set the most preferred option for our server instance. As before, press “Y” and press “Next” to continue.

Once the installation is complete, confirm the Docker version on the command line as shown.

$ docker –version

To run docker commands as sudo user add the user to docker groups as shown.

$ sudo usermod -aG docker $ USER

Restart your system for this to take effect.

Step 4: Manage the Docker Service

Docker works like a daemon, as do services like SSH. This means that you can perform tasks such as checking its status, starting and stopping, and so on, to mention a few.

Docker is currently inactive and down. To start the Docker service, run:

$ sudo systemctl start docker

Check if Docker is running by calling:

State docker $ sudo systemctl

The output confirms that Docker is up and running.

Also, you can allow docker to run every time you boot or reboot as follows.

$ sudo systemctl enable docker

Similarly, you can disable Docker like this:

$ sudo systemctl disable docker

Step 5. Using Docker to Perform Docker Tasks

As we explained earlier in the introduction, Docker is a containerization framework that manages container images, which are isolated units with their own libraries, dependencies, and configuration files. You can build your own container image, or get one from the Docker Hub, which is a huge repository filled with thousands of images from major vendors.

First, we’ll run a simulation to test if Docker is working as expected. To do this, we will retrieve the ‘Hello world’ image from the Docker hub as shown.

$ docker run hello-world

You should get the result below as the container prints the message “Hello from Docker!”

As you can see from the output, Docker simply pulled the hello-world image from the Docker hub, created the container image, and launched the container, which then sent a “Hello from Docker!” Message to the terminal.

To pull only the docker image without starting the container, use the syntax:

$ docker pull image-name

For example, let’s try to get an image of the Apache web server.

$ docker pull httpd

To confirm that the docker images are on the system, issue the command:

$ docker images

In the output, we have 2 images: a hello-world image and an httpd Apache web server image. The output gives you the repository name, image tag, image id, creation time, and image size.

With the image on the system, you can rotate the container by running:

$ docker run image-name

This launches the container in the foreground. However, this is not always desirable as you will not be able to run other commands. A workaround is to run the image in the background so you can continue running other commands.

To run the container image in the background, use the -d option.

$ docker run -d image-name

For example, to run an Apache container image, run:

$ docker run -d httpd

To check running containers, use the command:

$ docker ps

Again, you will get verbose output about the container, including the container ID, the image the container was created from, creation time and status, and the container name.

When you are done starting the container, you can stop it using the syntax:

$ docker stop CONTAINER-ID

For example, to stop the httpd container, run:

$ docker stop c07ffb3fc13f

You can verify that the container is stopped using the docker ps command as explained earlier.

$ docker ps

In addition, you can add the -a flag to view all containers – running or stopped.

$ docker ps -a

To delete an image, you must first stop the container as shown earlier. After stopping, use the below syntax to remove the image.

$ docker rmi -f REPOSITORY NAME or IMAGE ID

For example, to remove the hello-world image, pause the image as follows.

$ docker stop 043df63a1b29

Then delete the image as follows.

$ docker rmi -f hello world

FTP, short for File Transfer Protocol, is a standard protocol for exchanging files over the Internet or a simple local area network. The FTP servers have been around for over 30 years and provide simple yet efficient file sharing.

How to Create a Local FTP Server from Scratch

FTP is now being replaced by more secure options such as SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) and FTPS (FTP over SSL), which encrypt data sent to and from servers. However, it would be prudent to evaluate the basics of setting up an FTP server and see how it can be configured for simple file sharing.

In this guide, we will walk you through the installation and configuration of an FTP server in Windows Server 2019. There are two ways to install an FTP server. You can use the graphical Server Manager tool or Windows Powershell if you like working with the terminal. We’ll look at each of them in turn.

How to Install FTP Server using Server Manager

Server Manager is a graphical console introduced in Windows Server 2008. The goal was to help system administrators easily install and manage various features and roles on a server. To install an FTP server using Server Manager, follow the steps as shown in the figure.

Step 1. Start Server Manager

Typically, the Server Manager utility starts automatically after you log on. Alternatively, you can click the Start menu button and select Server Manager from the drop-down menu that appears.

Once launched, click on the Add Roles and Features option as shown.

Step 2. Proceed with the installation

When you select Add Roles and Features, the installation wizard starts. The wizard gives you a summary of the tasks you can perform, such as adding/removing roles and features. There are a few prerequisites you need to fulfill before continuing.

After you have viewed the summary, just click Next.

Step 3. Select the type of installation

In the next step, select the “Role or Feature-Based” installation and click Next.

After that, you will need to select a server on which you will install roles and features. By default, the server you are working on will be selected. Just accept the defaults and click Next.

Step 5. Select Server Roles to Install

In the next step, a list of server roles will be listed. Click on the “IIS Web Server” option.

A pop-up window will open listing the roles to be installed as shown.

Click Add Features and click Next to proceed to the next step.

Step 6. Select server functions

Nothing special is required at this stage, so click Next again.

Step 7: Overview of Internet Information Services (IIS)

The next step gives you an idea of what a web server is and what role it plays. So again, just click Next to move on to the next step.

Step 8. Select Role Services

This is the most important step in which we choose the FTP function. Just scroll and check the FTP Server checkbox and the corresponding FTP sub-options (FTP service and FTP extensibility). Then click Next.

Step 9. Confirm Installation

Finally, you will be presented with a summary of the roles and features that you have chosen to install. To confirm and start the installation process, click the Install button.

The installation will take a while, so a little patience will come in handy. After the installation is complete, restart the server so that the roles and features are fully enabled.

As we mentioned, we can install FTP using Windows Powershell. All the steps we just went through can be summarized in one command in Windows Powershell as follows:

Install-WindowsFeature Web-FTP-Server -IncludeManagementTools

Step 10: Create FTP Directory

At this point, we have installed the FTP server function on the system and a default root directory is created for this. The path to the root directory is in C: inetpub.

We are going to create our own FTP directory where we are going to host files and directories that authorized users will have access to over the network.

Therefore, go to the path C: inetpub. Right-click and select New, then Folder. Give the folder the desired name. In this case, we have created a folder named my FTP directory.

We need to assign the necessary permissions to this directory so that an authorized user can read its contents. To do this, right-click the directory and select Properties.

In the pop-up Properties window, click the Security tab to configure the permissions. Select the group that you want to allow access to the directory. In this case, I selected the Users group. Then click the Change button to assign permissions to the group.

In our example, we clicked “Full Control” and click the “Apply” button.

Then click “OK”. You will be returned to the Properties window, where you will click the OK button again.

Step 11: Create an FTP Site

We assigned all the permissions to our FTP directory to the Users group. The next step is to create an FTP site, which we will map to an FTP directory.

In Server Manager, click Tools, then select Internet Service Information (IIS) Manager.

In the IIS Manager window that appears, click the server name in the left pane to open additional options. Right-click the Sites option and select Add FTP Site.

In the next step, specify the FTP site name and physical path by clicking on the adjacent three-dot button and navigating to the FTP directory we created in the previous step.

Then click “OK” then “Next” to go to the next step.

In the “Binding and SSL Settings” step, specify the IP address of your server and the FTP port. Be sure to select the No SSL option as we are not using an SSL certificate to secure the site.

The last step requires you to select an authentication type and configure which users will have access to the FTP site. Select Basic Authentication.

When logging in, click on the “Specified users” option – if you want one user to have access to the site – and enter the username right below it.

Alternatively, you can allow the user group by selecting Specified Roles or User Groups and specifying the user group in the provided “text box”. Then check the Read and Write permissions and click Finish.

Up to this point, we have successfully configured the FTP server. All that remains is to configure the firewall to allow remote users to access the FTP site.

Step 12: Configure Firewall

FTP is listening on port 21 and therefore we need to allow this port through the firewall. To get started, click the start menu button and search for “Advanced Security Firewall”

In the left pane, click Inbound Rules, go to the far right corner and click New Rule.

In the Rule Type window, select Predefined and select FTP Server from the drop-down menu. Click Next.

Make sure all firewall rules are disabled and click Next.

Finally, click on “Allow the connection” and click “Finish”.

Our FTP server can now be accessed remotely from a Windows or Linux / UNIX system. It remains only to check if we can establish a connection to the server.

Step 13: Test the FTP Server

To check if your FTP server is working as expected, go to the remote system and run a command prompt. Then enter the command below:

FTP server-IP

You will need to authenticate, so provide your username and password.

The above output confirms that we were able to successfully log in.

Let’s try something a little more ambitious. We’re going to create a directory and navigate to it using the commands shown:

ftp> mkdir reports
ftp> cd reports

To check for the existence of a directory, use the ls command as you would on a Linux system when listing files.

ftp> ls

Alternatively, you can go to your browser and navigate to the specified URL:

ftp: // Server IP

In the authentication pop-up window, enter your username and password and click the Login button.

And voila! Here is your catalog!

This confirms that our FTP server is working properly.

iPhone or iPad (cellular enabled)
iTunes is installed on the target computer.
Data cable for your iOS device (MFi certified preferred).
An activated SIM card from a provider that supports the modem.

The last point is especially important. Depending on where you live, you may have a mobile data subscription that prevents you from using a modem.

For this demo, we are using an iPad Pro running iOS 12. In older versions of iOS, the steps may differ slightly. In this scenario, the target computer is running Windows 10 with the latest updates.

The first thing you need to do on your iOS device is activate Personal Hotspot. To do this, swipe down from the middle of the home screen. This is what you see when no app is open and the device is unlocked. A search bar should appear.

Now tap the switch in the upper right corner of the screen to turn on the hotspot. When the switch turns green, you just need to connect the cable to both devices. You should see a small blue icon in the notification area on your iOS device that looks like this.

A network connection named “iPad” must be available on the Windows computer. It will have the same icon as the wired Ethernet connection.

How To Scan Documents On MacOS Using Only Your iOS Device.

It used to be a novelty that you could scan documents using your smartphone. Now it has become so commonplace that people just say yes when a new scanning application comes along. I mean, how can they reinvent the wheel at this stage?

But believe it or not, there is something that takes scanning to the next level of performance. One nice feature of macOS and iOS 12 that is mostly forgotten about is what’s called the Continuity Camera. From here, you can scan anything (or take a photo) with your iOS device and it will automatically appear on your macOS screen.

For this to work, you need to check the following on this checklist.

You need at least macOS Mojave and iOS 12. And that’s most people these days.
You need both your Mac and iOS devices on the same Wi-Fi network. So turn off this VPN for the time being .
Both devices must also be signed into the same iCloud account. iCloud is the secret sauce that connects your macOS and iOS devices for scanning.
As far as I know, Continuity Camera currently only works with Apple products like Pages, TextEdit, Notes, Mail and soon. I’m sure the third party apps will be back on track soon.

How to scan with Continuity Camera

First, open the Apple product you want to scan the image to. In this article, I’ll be using my favorite note-taking app for macOS – TextEdit.

Right-click the document you want to place the image in and select Take Photo or Scan Documents , depending on what you want to do. In this case, I’m going to scan the document.

A small pop-up window will appear on the screen asking you to scan the document using your iPhone.

If you look at your iPhone screen, you will see the camera app open, ready to scan.

Hover over the document and click the round button at the bottom. Or point to a document and hold it. Eventually, the camera will determine where the document starts and ends, and will automatically take a picture.

As you can see in the screenshot above, you now have several options. You can retry the scan if the first fails. You can edit it using the tools below, or if you’re happy with the result, click Finish. This will transfer the scanned image to the macOS document.

Depending on which macOS program you are using, you may be asked if you want to convert the resulting document to a different format. This is a purely personal choice on your part, but if you see no reason why not, I would just do it.

Conclusion

You can do this for just about anything – receipts, invoices, correspondence – just about anything you need to digitize. With iOS automatically pushing scans to macOS, you get rid of a few steps and save you time.
