How to Check Battery Health on Windows and Android.
My phone’s battery had recently run out, and like everyone else, I was in a hurry to get it fixed. But, to my horror, later I found out the real cause of the leak, an erroneous update. I’m sure you have had such cases with your phones or laptops too. However, lithium-ion batteries are designed to last for years, and if you use the battery correctly, you shouldn’t have any problems. But if you’re still curious, here are ways to check battery health on Windows and Android.
How to check battery health on Windows and Android
Before we get to the topic, let’s go over a few basic battery jargons.
- Estimated capacity is the total capacity that your battery should hold.
- Gross capacity is the current capacity that the battery can hold. Over time, the calculated capacity decreases and the battery is able to hold less power.
- The battery cycle counter is the total number of times the battery can be charged and discharged. For example, if you charge the battery to 65%, discharge it and charge it again to 35%, it will count as one complete cycle.
Windows
Windows has its own tool called “powercfg” that allows you to check the health of your battery. It is a command line utility used to generate a detailed report. To run the utility, press Windows Key + R and type “cmd “. You can also search for cmd in the start menu. At the command prompt, just type the following command and press Enter. powercfg / batteryreport
This command will generate a detailed report and display the file path. You can also access it right away by typing “battery-report.html” at the command line. The report will open in your browser.

The report is divided into several sections, starting with the PC overview. Among other things, you can check the product name, BIOS, OS build, report generation date. When you scroll down the page, the Installed Battery section appears, displaying battery information. It lists the name, manufacturer, serial number and, most importantly, design and total charging capacity.
If you have multiple batteries installed, they will appear in the same section.
Understanding the report
The Recent Usage section will show you the battery charge status for the last three days. It shows the system startup time (regardless of whether the adapter or the battery was the power source) and the remaining battery capacity in both mWh and percentage. In addition, you have a battery usage indicator that shows the low battery in the last 72 hours. Indicated by a table supplemented by a diagram. You can easily check how long your system has been on battery power, the percentage of discharged power, etc.
Although the report indicates the current design and full charge capacity, looking at the entire battery history will put things in perspective. The battery capacity history gives you an idea of both design and total charge capacity in a clean table. Thus, for a new laptop, the total capacity will be closer to the design, and if you have an old one, you can clearly distinguish the difference in values.

The table shows the operating times for when fully charged and at rated power . In comparison, my laptop ran 6 hours when it was brand new, but it currently runs for about three and a half hours.

The Windows Battery Report is comprehensive and I don’t think you need an additional application. But for those who don’t want to use the command line, presenting battery information is a simple tool. It shows all the information you need about your battery. The only thing that makes it stand out is the real-time display of values.
The first section is battery information, which shows you design capacity, full charge capacity, and current capacity (in real time). In addition, you have a battery percentage, which should be 100% if your device is new. In addition, it also shows the time remaining and the total time required to fully charge the battery. You don’t need to worry about generating statistics as they are updated automatically at 10 second intervals. There is a battery log section that can be toggled by pressing F8.
You can export the report to HTML and also add an icon bar to the taskbar. It constantly shows the remaining time to charge and the current capacity. Now that you know how healthy your battery is, do you really need to replace it?

You use your phone much more often than your computer or laptop. This makes it even more important to monitor the health of the battery. While there are many options to choose from in the Play Store, I’ve tested a few already and this is the best I could find.
