I recently purchased an Actiontec MoCA 2.0 Ethernet Coaxial Cable Adapter because my entire house is connected to a coaxial cable and I recently upgraded to FIOS Quantum Gateway which also supports MoCA 2.0.

Using this adapter, I was able to increase the local data transfer rate on my LAN to about 400 Mbps or 50 Mbps compared to the previous speed I got with MoCA 1.1 which was around 100 Mbps or 12.5 MB / s.

I also recently wrote a post on my other site explaining how moving to a new quantum gateway is a good step if you have FIOS for your internet.

While this is a great adapter and one of the few to support MoCA 2.0, it also has some issues. If you read reviews on Amazon, they are either great or crash frequently and need to be restarted.

Luckily Actiontec has been up to par with new firmware updates. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a single site that could tell me how to update the firmware on the adapter! Finally, I contacted the support representatives at Actiontec and went over the procedure.

In this article, I will show you how to connect to the web interface of the Actiontec ECB6200 adapter and update the firmware. In addition, I will also provide a download link for the latest firmware they provided me. This procedure may or may not work on the ECB6000.

ECB6200 Firmware Upgrade

First, you need to disconnect the coaxial cable from the adapter. Once you’ve done that, connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the adapter and the other end to your Windows PC.

Now on your Windows PC, we need to change some network settings so that you can connect to the web interface of the adapter. To do this, open Control Panel and click Network and Sharing Center. Make sure you switch from viewing categories to small or large icons.

Now go ahead and click “Change adapter settings” from the menu on the left.

Right-click Ethernet or Local Area Connection and select Properties.

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) from the list and click the Properties button.

Go ahead and select the Use the following IP address radio button and enter the following numbers as shown below. I chose 192.168.144.5 as the IP address, but you can choose anything for the last number as long as it doesn’t end in .30 or .1.

Make sure to set the default gateway 192.168.144.1. You don’t need to enter any numbers for DNS servers. Click OK and then OK again to return to Control Panel. Now open your web browser and enter the following IP address: 192.168.144.30.

If everything is configured correctly, you should see a simple Actiontec web page with information about the adapter. Where it says SW Version is the current firmware version for the Actiontec adapter. At the time of this writing, the latest version is 2.11.1.10.6200.1.

You can download the latest flash memory from the link above. This was sent to me directly by Actiontec and I also checked it using VirusTotal to make sure it was clean. Now click on “Software Update” and click on the “Browse” button to select the .BIN file. Obviously, you need to unzip the contents first before trying to download the file.

Click the Download button and the download will begin. You will see the loading percentage, and when it reaches 100%, you will see the words “Done” and “Restart”. Please note that the screen is not updating at this time. You should wait a minute or so and then just try refreshing the webpage again.

I had to update a couple of them and I ran into multiple issues. First, it sometimes hung at a certain percentage when loading. The first time I tried it, it went up to 87% and then it just sat there. Eventually I unplugged it, plugged it back in and tried again. It worked in the end.

Another update went fine, but when I plugged it back in where I used it in my house, it kept disconnecting. The power indicator came on, then the coaxial light came on, and after about two seconds the coaxial light went out. Then the power indicator will turn off and on again, and then the same with the coaxial light. In this case, I had to press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds after disconnecting all cables and that fixed the problem.
