How to Take Screenshot on Mac

Mac computers have several keyboard shortcuts for taking different types of screenshots. The Touch Bar (for MacBook Pro) also has a dedicated Screenshot tool for the same purpose.

Method 1. Using keyboard shortcuts

Pressing Shift + Command + 3 at the same time will take a screenshot of the entire screen.

Converting screenshots to JPEG can save space on your Mac. You may also need to convert screenshots to Portable Document Format (PDF) to meet file upload requirements on certain platforms or websites.

Fortunately, macOS’s built-in editor allows you to convert your default PNG screenshots to JPEG (or JPG), TIFF, HEIC, PDF, and more.

1. Convert Screenshot to PDF on Mac

Capture an area of the screen using keyboard shortcuts or the Touch Bar and follow these steps to convert the screenshot to PDF.

Double-click or double-tap the screenshot to open it with a preview – built-in macOS image and PDF editor.

We especially recommend changing the default format for screenshots to JPG if your Mac is running out of memory. This is because PNG files often take up more storage space than JPG and PDF documents.

The image below shows the file sizes of three screenshots (in different formats) that we took simultaneously on our test MacBook.

PNG screenshot took up the most space (3.1 MB), followed by PDF (2.7 MB) and JPG (680 KB) screenshots.

This command tells your Mac to save screenshot files in JPG format.

In the future, your Mac will save screenshots in PDF format. macOS also allows you to save screenshots to other multimedia formats such as TIFF and GIF. All you have to do is paste in the defaults, write com.apple.screencapture type TIFF, or write com.apple.screencapture type GIF in the terminal window by default and press Enter.

These commands will change the default file format for your Mac screenshots to TIFF or GIF, respectively.

To change the default screenshot file format to PNG, paste in the defaults, write com.apple.screencapture type PNG in the Terminal window and press Enter.

To verify that the format of your Mac’s screenshot has changed, take a screenshot and check the file details.

Right-click the screenshot or Control-click Get Info from the context menu and check the Type line under General.

If the aspect ratio of the screenshot has not changed, rerun the appropriate command, take another screenshot, and check the aspect ratio again. If you are still unable to change the file format of the screenshot, restart your Mac and try again.

How to Crop a Screenshot on Mac Using the Cropping Tool

Usually, when you want to take a screenshot on your Mac, you have to use hotkeys or keyboard shortcuts like:

Command + Shift + 3 to take a full screenshot.
Command + Shift + 4 to capture a portion of the screen.

Note: Snapchat loves to fix these methods in its updates and many previously known methods no longer work, but as of June 2018, all of the following methods are working fine.

1. Clear application data

This is one of the more tedious processes, but it also doesn’t involve downloading third-party apps or installing any third-party apps on your phone. The idea is pretty simple; let Snapchat download the story or image, disconnect your internet connection, and take a screenshot. Now, before Snapchat can send any notification to the sender, you clear the app cache and data from settings.

Here’s how to do it.

1. So, first things first, open Snapchat and make sure the required snap-in is fully loaded.
2. As soon as it doesn’t get in the way, turn off Wi-Fi / mobile data or simply switch to airplane mode and open the snap.
3. It’s time to take a screenshot, but don’t turn on the connection just yet.
4. This is probably the most important step in this entire process. Go to System Preferences Apps Snapchat Storage Clear Cache & Clear Data.

A great bonus to this method is that it doesn’t even tell the sender that you’ve viewed the snapshot, let alone get notified of any screenshots. But the downside is that after clearing the application cache and data, you are logged out and you need to log back in every time you do this.

2. Use a screen recording application

On Android, Snapchat still can’t tell if you’re recording your screen or not while you’re in the app, and this method takes full advantage of this flaw.

Steps:

2. Open Snapchat and start recording your screen.
3. While recording is in progress, open or simply view the stories or snapshots for which you want to capture screenshots. to act in film.
4. Then stop recording.
5. Go to gallery or file manager and open the recorded video. Now you can take as many screenshots as you like from the playback screen recording.

Compared to the previous method, this method is much more flexible and you can record as much as you want and later take screenshots from the video; although handling very long videos may take some patience. Just remember to set the maximum resolution and format to get the best results.

– Can be done live even while chatting.

– You can also shoot videos.

Cons:
– Requires a significant amount of memory, especially for longer recordings.
– Recording the screen and then capturing the screenshots again takes a bit of a tedious process.

3. Use Google Assistant

This is really smart and one of the easiest ways to take a screenshot of someone’s Snapchat Story without knowing anything. I honestly don’t know how long it will take until Snapchat fixes this, why not use it to its fullest while it’s still available.

Steps:

1. Open Snapchat for the images you want to take snapshots.
2. Bring up Google Assistant by saying “Ok Google” or by holding the Home button.
3. Ask Google Assistant to take a screenshot by saying “Take a screenshot”, or you can even enter it.

While the whole process is very simple and quick, one slight annoyance I got with this method is that Google Assistant doesn’t give any way to save the screenshot directly to your gallery, but instead offers several sharing options such as sharing with someone else or uploading to Google Photos.

Pros:
– Simple and fast.
– No need to install third-party apps.

Cons:
– Can’t save directly to gallery.

Alternative:
If you are using an older device or an older version of Android where Google Assistant is not supported or supported in your language, we will help you with this free app. Copy (text and screenshots). Once you assign it the appropriate permissions and set it as the default Assist app, it will work much the same as Google Assistant; You can bring it up by long pressing the Home button and clicking the image icon to take a screenshot.

4. SnapSaver

SnapSaver is another app from the Google Play Store that lets you secretly take screenshots of any person’s Snapchat photos. The app looks like a hybrid of the two previous methods; you start a session and can take screenshots anytime during your session.

Steps:
1. Open the Snap Saver app and start a session.
2. Select the desired option: Screenshot, Screen Recorder, Batch Screenshot and Inline.
3. Login to Snapchat and open and paste the pictures you want to keep.
4. Click the pop-up camera icon on the screen to take a screenshot.
5. End your session by returning to the application.

The app also has its own gallery where you can see all the screenshots or screen recordings you’ve taken, and share them directly from there. It also provides many options and settings to choose from and is generally a reliable method.

As a blogger, I have to take screenshots of my MacOS often. And luckily there is a built-in option for that (Cmd + Shift + 4 if you don’t already know)

But there is one big problem: by default, macOS saves all screenshots in png format, which, although it is the best option for text, but the file size is too large for online sites.

To give you an idea, below are two full-size screenshots of my iMac 5k, and while there is no discernible difference in quality, the png file is over 5MB and the jpg screenshot is only 32KB. In short, if you frequently upload your screenshot to the Internet, change the default screenshot format to jpg.

Here’s how to do it.

1. Launch Terminal on your Mac. To do this, press the spacebar and cmd to bring up the spotlight search, then find and press “Terminal”.

2. Type or copy / paste the following command into the Terminal window and then press the default enter key, write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

4.From now on, your screenshot format will be jpeg by default. However, the effect will only appear after restarting the Mac. Or you can enter the following command to restart the front-end server (search box) and it will do the same. killall SystemUIServer

5. Press the enter key. And it’s all. From now on, when you take screenshots on MacOS, the default file format should be jpeg.

What if you want another file format?

How to change the location where screenshots are saved?

1. Create a new folder where you want to save screenshots. Open Finder, go to Documents Create a New Folder, let’s call it Screenshots.

2. Open your terminal again, type the following command and press Enter. by default write com.apple.screencapture location / Users / mrinalsaha / Documents / Screenshots

Be sure to replace the name mrinalsaha with your system username, or you can also drag the screenshots folder into the terminal to get the path to it.
