How To Setup Your Own VPN Server In Cloud.

A VPN not only masks your location, it also encrypts the connection and makes it nearly impossible for outsiders to track what you are browsing. Also, depending on where the VPN server is located, you can easily access geo-restricted websites. There are several VPN services, both free and paid. However, one issue I always run into when using these third party VPN services is that they are quite slow. For example, I have a decent 30 Mbps connection at home. But when I connect to a third party VPN service, the connection speed drops to 1-5 Mbps.

One of the reasons for this is that VPN services serve as many people as possible on a single server, and all of these users need to share the available bandwidth. In addition, when using a third-party VPN service, you have no control over how they use the data they collect about you.

To deal with all this, you can set up your own VPN server and connect to it. Be aware that there is a fee to create your own VPN server. At the very least, you need to pay $ 5 per month for a server, which gives you 1TB of monthly bandwidth.

Now I want to make it as easy as possible to create a VPN so that even a novice user who has never created or worked with the cloud can feel comfortable. For this reason, I am using Vultr. How to set up your own VPN server

First, register a Vultr account. After that go to the main screen and select “Server” in the left pane. Then click the “+” sign in the upper right corner.

You will be taken to the server configuration screen. First, select the country where your server should be located. In my case, since I want my VPN to have a US IP address, I choose a New York location.

Vultr has a predefined image for building your own VPN server. It just means you don’t have to go through all the effort of manually setting up your server, installing all the VPN related software and configuring it. So, go to the Applications tab and select the OpenVPN option.

The next step is to select the server size. Since a $ 5 server gives you 1TB of bandwidth, that’s enough for most. So, pick a $ 5 server. If you need more bandwidth, you can also choose other sizes.

You can leave all other settings as they are. At the bottom of the page, you can name your server. Name it whatever you want and click the Deploy Now button.

Server configuration may take several minutes. Since we selected a pre-configured OpenVPN image, the server is automatically configured in the background.

After the server is installed and configured correctly, you will see “In Progress” in the “Status” section.

Since the server is preconfigured to use OpenVPN, a VPN administrator username and password is generated for you. Click on the server name and you will find the IP address, username and password to login to the OpenVPN admin panel right below the server details. The same username and password are sent to your email address.

Note: Please be aware that the OpenVPN username and password are different from the actual server username and password.

Copy the server IP address, paste it into the address bar and press Enter. Your browser may warn you that the SSL certificate is invalid. This is completely normal. Click the Advanced link.

You will now see the OpenVPN admin login screen. Copy the username and password from the Vultr server details page, paste them, select Login from the drop-down menu and click the Go button.

Until now, you have only created a VPN server. You need to connect to this server in order to create a VPN connection. To make it easier. OpenVPN provides you with an easy installer for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. This installer allows you to connect to your VPN server with one click from the system of your choice. Just click on the link and the installer will be downloaded. In my case, I am downloading the Windows Installer.

After downloading the software, install it like any other Windows software. After installation, you will see OpenVPN added to the Windows taskbar.

Right-click the OpenVPN icon, expand your server’s IP address menu and click the Connect button.

You will be prompted for your OpenVPN username and password. Enter these details and click the “Connect” button.

Since this is your first time connecting to a VPN server and it has its own SSL certificate, you will see a warning window. Select the Do not ask again check box and click Yes.

That’s all. The program will connect to your server and establish a VPN connection.

If you want, you can search for “what is my IP address” on Google and it will show the IP of your server, not your real IP.

If you want to disconnect from the VPN server, right-click the OpenVPN icon in the system tray and select the Disconnect option.

Now, if you want, you can see how many users are connected to your VPN server. To do this, log into your VPN server from a web browser and click the “Admin” button. On the admin page, go to the Current Users page and you will see all connected users / systems. This page also shows the real IP address of the connected systems and the amount of data used.

If needed, you can also create multiple users through the OpenVPN admin page. To create users, simply go to the User Permissions page in the User Management section. In the right pane, enter your username in the blank field and click the save settings button. If you would like to grant this user administrator rights, select the Administrator checkbox before clicking the Save Settings button.

Telnet is the oldest computer protocol that allows two computers to communicate with each other over the Internet or a local area network. However, Microsoft decided to remove Telnet Server from Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 onwards. This is a good move given that Telnet does not support encryption and data travels over the network in plain text. But what if I need Telnet for educational purposes? Or what if I don’t want to configure SSL since I am dealing with a public server.

So, here are some ways to enable Telnet client as well as Telnet server on Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or Windows Server 2012 and above. Let’s start with the client first.

How to enable Telnet Client in Windows 10

If you enter telnet at the command line, you will receive the error “Telnet is not recognized as an internal or external command.” This is because the Telnet client is disabled by default in Windows 10. To enable Telnet, go to the Start menu and type Turn Windows features on or off.

In the next popup, navigate to Telnet client. Check the box next to it and click OK.

Windows will take some time to install Telnet and after that you can use the telnet command in CMD or run the telnet utility from the search menu. To do this, press Win + S and enter Telnet.

This will open the telnet client directly in CMD and the window should look like below.

How to enable Telnet Server for Windows 10

Telnet clients allow you to connect to other Telnet servers. You cannot connect to your own system and run remote commands. You will need a Telnet server to do this, and unfortunately Windows 10 doesn’t have its own way to enable it. To start Telnet service on port 23, you need to install third-party applications.

Two of my favorite utilities for this are HK Telnet Server and KpyM Telnet Server. They both serve a different audience.

If all you need is to allow the telnet server to run remote commands on your machine, then I would suggest the HK Telnet server. The setup is pretty straightforward. Just download the app and launch it. It looks more like a portable application than an exe. As soon as you launch the application, you will have a floating window.

Here you can enter the port number from which Telnet will accept connections. The user interface is pretty simple with a minimum of customization. You can set user ID and password for telnet login.

There is no way to enforce SSL or encryption in the app. If you want a larger SSH solution like custom login message and IP blocking, you need to upgrade to KpyM Telnet Server. During the installation of the application, you will be prompted to start the server either on port 22 (SSH) or on port 23 (telnet). In case you are going to start telnet, select port 23 now, because this is the only time you will see the GUI in this application.

Once the installation is complete, you can proceed with the configuration using the KTS daemon. Go to the start menu and type “Configure kpyM Telnet SSH Server”. A black dialog box will open where you can configure settings such as SSL usage, port number, login message, password, etc. The same daemon also provides options for starting or stopping the telnet server.

Closing words

Security was one of the major concerns that led to the removal of Telnet Server from Windows. It is advisable not to use telnet when dealing with sensitive data. However, in the case of public servers, it’s okay if you don’t want to configure encryption and SSL key certificates.

I am one of those who rip the DVDs and BluRays I bought. It helps me store them better, organize them the way I want, and watch them whenever I want on any device of my choice. But as good as it sounds, this method has its problems. One is that every time I have to manually copy the media to the devices I want to watch.

As you might guess, this is not possible in all situations, especially when using small devices such as smartphones. There are many reasons for this, such as lack of storage space, playback quality, etc. And it also goes against the goal of better organizing your media such as music, movies and photos.

So, to keep things simple, it’s best to have a central location for all your media, including your TV, and let your devices talk to each other. It will help you better organize and stream your media to any device, anytime.

What is Plex Media Server?

As you can tell by the name, Plex Media Server lets you store all your media on one device and access it from any device. The traditional manual procedure is quite tedious, even for professional users. The good thing about Plex is that you can install it on almost any modern device like Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS, PlayStation, Xbox, etc. devices without having to copy files back and forth.

Plus, Plex can also automatically add metadata like movie trailers, album covers, artist names, and more to better organize your media.

Is Plex free?

Plex is offered in both free and paid versions. Plex Media Server is free, and all non-mobile and public apps are free, including those for game consoles, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and more. While mobile apps are free to use, they are limited in functionality. That is, the playback time of music and movies is limited to one minute, and photos are watermarked.

That being said, you can unlock this simply by paying a one-time fee (about $ 5 for my Android device). What is worth the price.

Installation and use

Installing and using Plex is pretty straightforward.

The first thing you need to do is decide which device you want to use as a server. Obviously, the device needs to be powerful enough as the Plex server will transcode media on the fly. So, the more devices you connect to a Plex server, the more powerful it should be. In this case, I’m making my primary Windows 10 computer a server. All my other devices will connect to it to access media.

To get started, download Plex Media Server from the official website and install it like any other Windows software.

After installation, reboot your system and run the application. To get started, you need to sign up for a Plex account. So, click on the “Register” option to continue.

Now fill in all the fields as indicated in the application and click the “Register” button.

After registration, you will be taken to a welcome screen. Click the “Got it” button to continue.

Now you need to add your media folders like movies and music to the Plex library. To do this, click the “Add Library” button.

Here select the type of library, name the library, select the language and click the “Next” button. Since I want to create a movie library, I selected the movie type library and named it “movies”.

Now if you watch movies in different languages or want to differentiate your personal videos from other videos, save them in separate folders and create separate libraries. For example, since I watch films in four different languages (Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and English), I have already organized my films in four different folders and created four different libraries.

Here in that window, click the Browse Media Folder button.

Now browse your file system and select your movies folder.

When you are done with your selection, click the Add Library button in the main window.

After completing the above steps, you will be taken back to the “Server Configuration” window. Just follow the same procedure to add other libraries such as music and photos. When everything is done, click the Next button.

You will now be prompted to download Plex apps to other devices. Click the Get Plex Apps button to download the appropriate apps for all your devices. Click the Finish button to close the wizard.

The above action will take you to the home screen where you will see all your media. Since this is your first use, Plex will automatically download the album art and other metadata from the web. This may take some time depending on your internet speed.

You have finished setting up your Plex server. To watch your media on other devices, all you have to do is download the Plex apps and install them. For example, I downloaded the Plex Android app from an Android device.

Once you are logged in, you will see all your media and are ready to stream. However, as I said earlier, in order to stream media through the Plex mobile apps, you must either be a premium member or pay a one-time fee for that particular app.

What are Private Name Server and How to Add them.

Last month our site had 10,000 page views per day. Now that’s too much traffic for a shared hosting blog. Right? So, I started looking for the best hosting plan. And luckily, this Black Friday I got a sweet 80% off Hostgator and finally upgraded to their VPS hosting.

Over the years, I have tried shared hosting from various hosting providers. And they all look the same when you use their control panel. But this does not apply to VPS hosting. This is different. For example, unlike shared hosting, the control panel is different and you get full root access without any restrictions.

Part of the migration was easy. I used Hostgator’s Free Website Transfer service to move my files from my old shared hosting account to my new VPS hosting. Everything went smoothly. The next step was to update the nameserver. But it was a little tricky.

What is a NameServer?

Let’s say you bought a domain and hosting from two different sellers. How does your domain know where to point now? How do you link both of them?

Well, a nameserver will solve this problem.

When you buy any plan, you get 2 nameservers in your welcome email. You must add these two entries in your domain name server settings. This way, your domain will know where the website is hosted.

Likewise, if you change your host, you also need to update your nameserver. But the problem is that the process of updating the nameserver on shared hosting and VPS hosting is slightly different. For instance-

Public or private name server

In shared hosting we use a shared name server, i.e. it uses the domain name of your hosting provider. For example, ns123.hostgator.com and ns124.hostgator.com.

But if you upgrade to a VPS or dedicated hosting package, you get private name servers, i.e. with your domain name in it. For example, ns1.receivetipstricks.com and ns2.receivetipstricks.com . It also has 2 IP addresses associated with each name server.

How to add a nameserver

Common name server

The steps are different for each domain registrar, but here’s an overview.

To update your shared name server, sign in to your domain registrar’s website. Find Domain look for DNS Manager , then look for nameserver and enter the two nameservers you receive in your welcome email.

However, if you add your private nameserver the traditional way, you will get an error. This is because you need to first map your nameserver to the two IPs you get with it. This is done under the hostname.

Again, the steps to add a private nameserver are different for each registrar, but if you’re using GoDaddy, here’s how.

Private name server

A new window will open, click Preferences Hostname Manage.

A pop-up window will open. Click on add hostname. On the hostname tab, enter ns1 in the hostname field (you do not need to enter the domain name as it is already listed), and then in the IP address field, enter the equivalent host IP address.

Repeat the same process for the second hostname, that is, click Add Hostname enter ns2 and this is the equivalent IP address. Then save your changes and your hostname will be registered.

You will immediately receive a confirmation email from Godaddy. However, sometimes it can take up to 2-3 hours to register the hostname, so please be patient.

Now go to nameserver manage add your private nameserver. And remove the old nameserver. See screenshot below.

And it’s all. Now all you have to do is wait. Name server propagation can take up to 48 hours. But you can see the effect within an hour or so.

Also, do not revoke your old host until you are sure that your nameserver propagation has been successful, or some of your visitors may face a problem.

How can you make sure you have successfully updated your nameserver?

There is no official way to do this. However, there are several workarounds.

Since you have changed your hosting, your website will have a new IP address. Now, if you know your old and new IP address (both mentioned in the hosting provider’s welcome email), check your link to your websites.

If you see a new IP address, it means that the nameserver has updated successfully, otherwise you will either have to wait or you did something wrong.

To ping your site from all over the world, use a DNS checker site. If you ping your website immediately after updating your nameserver, chances are you will see both the old and the new IP address of your website. Like the screenshot below.
