How to Connect a Phone to Chromebook Using Phone Hub.

Phone Hub is a ChromeOS feature that allows you to access and control Android devices from your Chromebook. With Phone Hub, you can view your phone’s notifications, unlock your Chromebook without a password, use your phone on the web, and more.

This guide covers the steps to set up Phone Hub on a Chromebook. You’ll also learn how to use the Phone Hub features on your Chromebook.

Phone Hub Requirements

Sharing and syncing information across devices in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, Apple TV, etc.) is easy. This is because the same company develops their own operating systems (and hardware).

Chromebooks and Android smartphones run operating systems (Android and Chrome OS) developed by Google. Thus, connecting both devices is equally easy, as long as they meet the requirements of the OS.

First, Phone Hub works on Chromebooks running Chrome OS v71 or later. So, go to Settings > About Chrome OS to check your Chromebook operating system version.

Also, your companion Android phone must be running Android version 5.1 or later.

Go to “Settings” > “About phone” and check the line “Android version” for the operating system of your device.

The final requirement is that you must link your Chromebook and Android phone to the same (personal) Google account.

Note. You may not be able to connect your Chromebook to your Android phone if one of the devices is using a Google work or school account.

How to Set Up Phone Hub on Chromebook

Pairing your Android phone and Chromebook is a simple process. Open the Settings app on your Chromebook and do the following:

Select “Connected Devices” in the sidebar and click the “Settings” button next to “Android Phone”.

The Setup Assistant will automatically detect and display the devices associated with your Google account. Select Accept and continue.

If you have multiple Android phones linked to your Google Account, select your preferred device and click Accept and Continue.

Enter your Google account password and click Done.

To continue, select “Done” on the success page.

Your phone is now paired with your Chromebook. Therefore, you should receive a notification on your phone.

Similarly, the phone icon (Phone Hub) will appear in the status bar of your Chromebook – in the lower right corner of the screen. This is the quick settings menu for accessing Phone Hub features and managing your Android phone.

If the Phone Hub icon does not appear in the status bar, enable it in the settings menu. Go to Settings > Connected devices, select your phone and enable Phone Hub.

You can remotely locate your phone, check battery life, and put it on silent using the Phone Hub shortcut. Make sure your devices (Chromebook and phone) are connected to the internet. Issues can delay verification and pairing of both devices. Some features may not be available until your devices are connected to the Internet.

Use and Customize Phone Hub Features on Your Chromebook

Launch your Chromebook’s Settings app, select “Connected Devices” in the sidebar, and make sure your phone is “On”. Then touch your phone to set up Phone Hub features.

“Smart Lock” lets you sign into your Chromebook or Google account without a password or PIN. Wi-Fi Sync transfers your Chromebook’s Wi-Fi networks and settings to your phone and vice versa.

Unlock Your Chromebook Using Smart Lock

Newer generations of Chromebooks come with fingerprint sensors for easy authentication. Entering PINs and passwords to unlock a Chromebook (without fingerprint sensors) can be stressful. Therefore, you should set up Phone Hub and use the “Smart Lock” feature.

Enabling Smart Lock allows you to unlock your Chromebook with your Android phone. You don’t need to enter your Chromebook PIN, password, or fingerprint unlock. We’ll show you how to unlock a Chromebook with an Android phone.

Make sure your phone is unlocked, near your Chromebook, and has Bluetooth turned on. Similarly, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your Chromebook.

Go to Settings > Connected devices and select your phone.

Alternatively, select or tap the phone icon in the Chromebook’s status bar, and then select the gear icon.

Enable Smart Lock and select the right arrow icon next to Smart Lock.

Select Unlock Device Only to unlock your Chromebook using your Android phone only. The Unlock device and sign in to Google account option allows you to remotely unlock your Chromebook and sign in to Google using your Android phone.

Enter your Google account password if prompted.

You can now unlock your Chromebook with your Android phone. The next step is to “activate” Smart Lock by logging into your Chromebook using your Google account password.

Lock your Chromebook (press Search + L) and select Switch to password on the lock screen.

After turning on and activating Smart Lock, you can unlock your Chromebook with your phone.

Unlock your phone, hold it close to your Chromebook, and tap your profile icon or picture to sign in.

Automatically Share Your Phone’s Internet with Chromebook

You can connect your Chromebook to the Internet using your phone’s mobile or cellular data network.

Click the phone icon on your Chromebook’s status bar, then select Turn on hotspot.

Or go to Settings > Connected devices and select your phone. Then click Instant tethering, turn it on and select your phone again.

Depending on your mobile carrier, you should receive a notification on your Android phone to allow a hotspot to connect to your Chromebook. Click “Continue” again at the confirmation prompt to continue.

Open the Phone Hub context menu in the Chromebook’s status bar and check the “Enable hotspot” status. If it says Connected, you can continue to use your phone’s Internet on your Chromebook.

View Phone Notifications from Your Chromebook

You can view, read, and dismiss your phone’s notifications on your Chromebook. Unlock your phone, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and follow these steps to set up notification sync.

Open the Phone Hub menu in the status bar and select the gear icon.

Select “Notifications” or click the “Customize” button in the “Notifications” bar.

Select “Get Started” and follow the instructions on your phone to continue.

Click “Turn on notifications” in the pop-up window on your phone. Turn on Google Play Services and select “Allow” in the pop-up window.

Click Done on your Chromebook to continue.

From now on, notifications from your phone will appear on your Chromebook’s status bar when your phone is locked.

Disconnect Your Chromebook and Phone

You must turn off your Chromebook and Android phone if you are selling or giving away any device. If you won’t be using Phone Hub features for a while, turn off your phone (temporarily).

Open the Phone Hub shortcut in the status bar and tap the gear icon.

Set your phone to Disconnected to temporarily disconnect it from your Chromebook.

This will stop all Phone Hub functions until you turn your device back on.

To permanently turn off your phone, scroll down the page and select “Turn off” in the “Forget phone” line.

Select Disable again upon confirmation.

Explore Phone Hub

With Phone Hub on your devices, you can do so much more. For example, you can send and receive text messages on your Chromebook without picking up the phone. You can also view recent Chrome tabs (opened on your Chromebook) from your phone.

Translate App Basics

The Translator app looks the same on iPhone and iPad, with a neat and clean interface.

For a simple translation, select the “Translate” tab and select “from” and “to” languages at the top. You can choose from a dozen different languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Chinese. Then enter some text in the box.

If you prefer to speak text, tap the microphone icon and say the words you want to translate.

Use the Conversation Mode

To view your saved translations, go to the “Favorites” tab at the bottom. Note that you can also view recent translations under saved ones.

To remove favorites, tap the translated text and uncheck the star.

Look Up Translated Words

A bonus feature of the Translator app allows you to search for words in the Translation tab. With the in-app dictionary, you can see the pronunciation, definition, and part of speech in both your language and the target language.

Create a Trakt TV Account

Skip to the next section if you already have a Trakt account. Otherwise, follow these steps to create and set up a Trakt account.

Visit the Trakt TV website in any web browser and select “Join Trakt” or “Join Trakt for free” from the main screen.

Provide the information (email address, username, password, etc.) required to create a Trakt account and proceed to the next step.

Trakt will send a confirmation message to your email address. Open your inbox (or spam folder) and open the email from Trakt with the subject “Verify your email address”.

Select your country and the streaming services you use. To continue, select “Next Step”.

Select your favorite genres for movies and TV shows and click Next Step.

Select the movies/shows you’ve watched and the items you have – digital or on disc. You can also add content to your watchlist (such as shows you want to watch). To continue, select “Next Step”.

Connect social media platforms to your Trakt profile – if you wish – and select Next Step.

Trakt can send push notifications when someone follows you, replies to your comment, or likes your list. Select your preferred channel (Slack, Pushbullet, Pushover, etc.) if you’d like to receive push notifications for these activities. Otherwise, don’t select anything and select “Go to Dashboard”.

Activate Trakt TV on Fire TV Stick

The way you link and activate Trakt TV on your Fire TV Stick depends on the app you link to your Trakt account. This guide shows you how to activate and set up Trakt TV in two applications – Cinema HD and Kodi.

Activate Track TV in Cinema HD

Cinema HD is one of the best apps to stream and download movies (free) to Fire TV Stick and other Fire TV devices. Even though it is a free app, it does not display ads or annoying pop-ups while streaming or downloading movies. Cinema HD allows you to link your Trakt account to easily keep track of the content you’re streaming.

If you’re using the Cinema HD app on an Amazon Firestick, here’s how to link and activate Trakt TV within the app.

Open Cinema HD, select the hamburger menu icon in the top left corner and select “Settings”.

Select Account.

Scroll to the “Trakt” section and select “Login to Trakt TV”.

Cinema HD will display instructions for linking your Trakt account, as well as an 8-digit code. Do not close the page/instructions and proceed to the next step.

Open a web browser and go to the Trakt TV activation page – https://trakt.tv/activate. Sign in to Trakt if the web browser is not associated with your account.Enter the activation code displayed in the Cinema HD app on your TV and click Continue.

Select “Yes” in the confirmation prompt to confirm the app’s access to your Trakt account on the Fire TV Stick.

This will enable Trakt TV integration with the Cinema HD app.

Install and activate Trakt TV on Kodi

Kodi is another app that provides free content on Fire TV devices. Here’s how to activate and use the Trakt TV add-on for Kodi on your Fire TV Stick.

From the main menu, select the search icon in the upper left corner.

Select add-ons to search.

Type trakt.tv in the search bar and select OK.

Select Scenario – Path.

Select Install.

Wait while the app installs Trakt TV from the Kodi addon repository. Pay attention to the warning “Add-ons are included” in the upper right corner of the application.

Wait another 5-10 seconds and Trakt should display an authentication page with an activation code and a QR code.

Scan the QR code with your smartphone camera or continue to the next step to enter the code manually on the Trakt TV website.

Go to the Trakt TV activation page in a web browser and sign in to your Trakt account. Enter your activation code to authorize Trakt in the Kodi app if you’re already signed in. Click “Continue” to continue.

Select Yes at the confirmation prompt to connect the Trakt add-on to your account.

Note: The Trakt plugin may sometimes fail to display the activation page after installation. If you skipped the activation step, follow the steps below to get your activation code again.

Open the Kodi Settings menu, select Add-ons > My Add-ons > All > Trakt and select Customize.

On the General tab, select “How do I allow the trakt add-on to access my trakt.tv account?”.

Wait for the add-on to load the account authorization page and enter the code on the Trakt TV website – see step #6.

Check Apps Linked to Trakt

As mentioned earlier, Trakt supports several streaming and media apps on Fire TV devices. Here’s how to view and disable apps or media centers associated with your Trakt account:

Go to the Connected Apps section to view all apps that are allowed to access your Trakt account.

Find the app or streaming service you no longer use and select Revoke Access to unlink the app.

Do you prefer animated photos to still images for your iPhone wallpaper? Luckily, iOS has built-in support for live wallpapers. So if you’re using an iPhone 6s or later (i.e. iPhone 12), you can quickly set any Live Photo to display on your lock screen and home screen.

However, unlike standard dynamic wallpapers, Live Photos only animate on the lock screen. But they still help add some personality to your iPhone, and there are plenty of options.

If you already have a Live Photo image, setting it up as a Live Wallpaper on your iPhone is very easy. But if you want to use a GIF or a video clip, you must first convert it to a Live Photo.

Note. The first and second-generation iPhone SE models do not support live wallpapers. The same applies to all iPad models.

Use GIPHY to Convert GIFs and Videos to the Live Photo Format

GIPHY is a huge online GIF database and search engine that offers a free iPhone app that you can use to download any animated image as a Live Photo. In addition, it allows you to edit, upload and re-upload your own GIFs and videos as custom live wallpapers.

You can install GIPHY through the iPhone App Store. Once you’re done doing this, open the app and create a GIPHY account. Depending on what you want, follow the instructions below.

Download GIF from GIPHY library as Live Photo

1. Browse through the different categories of GIFs on the Home tab (such as Trending, Artists, Clips, etc.) and select the appropriate GIF. For best results, select an image that matches the vertical aspect ratio of the iPhone. You can also try to find GIFs by going to the “Search” tab.

2. Tap the More icon (three dots) in the upper right corner of the screen.

3. Click Convert to Live Photo.

4. Choose between “Save as Live Photo” (Fit to Screen) and “Save as Live Photo (Fit to Screen)”. The first one adjusts the photo so that it fills the screen by adding surrounding black bars, while the second one loads the original image without any changes.

5. The photo should automatically load into your iPhone’s camera roll.

Convert iPhone GIFs and Videos to Live Photo

1. Click New in the upper right corner of the Home tab.

2. Tap the Recent icon at the bottom left of the screen to access your iPhone’s photo library. Then select the GIF or video clip you want to convert.

3. Use the Caption, Stickers, Crop and Loop tools to edit the GIF or video clip. Click the “Go” button to continue.

4. Click Upload to GIPHY. Then set the “Visibility” option to “Private” (if you want to make the GIF or video private) and click “Upload to GIPHY” again.

5. Go to the “Account” tab, select “Downloads” and select the GIF or video you just downloaded.

6. Tap the More icon (three dots) in the top left corner of the screen.

7. Click Convert to Live Photo.

8. Select Save as Live Photo (Full Screen) or Save as Live Photo (Fit to Screen). The first one adds black stripes around the image, and the second one prepares it for loading without any adjustments.

9. Wait for GIPHY to upload the photo to your iPhone’s camera roll.

Set Live Photo as Wallpaper on iPhone

You can use the Settings app or the Photos app on iPhone to set any Live Photo as your Live Wallpaper. Below you will learn about both methods.

Set your live wallpaper using the Settings app

1. Open the Settings app. Then scroll down and tap Wallpaper.

2. Click “Choose new wallpaper”.

3. Select the Live Photo category.

4. Select a live photo.

5. Tap the Share icon in the lower left corner of the screen.

6. Scroll down the “Sharing” page and select “Use as Wallpaper”.

8. Tap the Live Photo icon at the bottom of the screen to change the Live Photo status to On. Then click “Install”.

9. Tap Set Lock Screen, Set Home Screen, or Set Both. If you only want the Live Photo to appear on the iPhone lock screen, be sure to select the Set Lock Screen option.

Set a live wallpaper with the Photos app

1. Open the Photos app.

2. Click the Albums tab and select Live Photos under Media Types.

3. Select the desired Live Photo.

4. Tap the Share icon.

5. Select Use as wallpaper.

6. Change Live Photo Status to On

7. Click Install.

8. Tap Set Lock Screen, Set Home Screen, or Set Both.

How to Activate Your Live Wallpaper on iPhone

Now that you’ve added Live Photo as your iPhone wallpaper, it’s time to check it out. So, start by going to the lock screen. Then press Haptic Touch (long press) or 3D-Touch and the screen and wallpaper will take effect!
